STATEMENTS OF INTEREST (Click on Name to View Resume/CV):

Jacquelyn Foster
This statement is in support of my seeking to become the Co-Chair of the New Professionals Interest Group. Although I have over 20 years experience in the legal field I am new to the field of international law. Hence, my perspective is different from a new law school graduate. For me, this is a career change and I know personally the challenges and frustrations that exist when attempting to enter the field of international law. I will bring to this position my years of experience as a lawyer and the many ideas for seminars and services that I have to assist new lawyers and experienced lawyers.
I have recently relocated to the DC metro area. In short, my background includes field work in implementing rule of law projects. My future plans are to continue to work in international development and to earn my LLM in human rights law. I am currently unemployed and searching for a new position. My new position may be located in the DC metro area or it may require me to return to the field. Even if I return to the field, I am confident that I will be able to assist my Co-Chair is carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the position.

The important goal of ASIL's new professional interest group is to help bridge the gap between studying law and becoming members of the bar. An effective co-chair of the group would need to fully appreciate the predicament of recent law school graduates interested in international law practice. She would also spearhead efforts such as networking events and career seminars that would shed light on the practice and improve the knowledge base of the membership. I am a recent law graduate with a passion for international law and the capacity to plan and execute networking events and seminars.

My short term goals include gaining significant experience in an international law practice and continuing to develop scholarly and publishable papers that tackle pertinent issues dealing with international economic law. I avail myself for the co-chair position because I believe I can contribute my energy, new ideas and planning skills to the leadership of the group. I will also be able to facilitate programs that take place away for Washington D.C especially in New York City where I am based and interest in international law abounds.

Saira Mohamed

I am interested in co-chairing the New Professionals Interest Group so that I can help other lawyers and law students explore the range of opportunities for professional development in the field of international law.  In addition to helping to introduce newer members to ASIL's many resources, I would like to put together panels on the range of international law opportunities in the U.S. government and on how new professionals in the private sector can pursue international law work.  I also would like to organize a mentoring network so that new professionals and law students can benefit from their fellow ASIL members' experiences.

I am currently a senior advisor to the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan at the State Department and was formerly an attorney in the State Department's Office of the Legal Advisor.  I will be leaving the Department in January to be the James Milligan Fellow at Columbia Law School, where my writing will focus on international law.  Before moving to DC, I clerked for Judge Kim McLane Wardlaw on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.  I received my JD from Columbia Law School, where I served as Executive Articles Editor for the Columbia Law Review; I also received a Master of International Affairs from Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs and a BA from Yale.

I have had the opportunity to participate in ASIL activities in many capacities:  as a speaker for ASIL career panels, through frequent attendance at ASIL events, and as a corresponding editor for International Legal Materials.  I would look forward to greater involvement with ASIL as the New Professionals Interest Group co-chair.

Thank you for participating!
